Sells de-identified location data to third parties, says so, and gives you a form to stop it. Then buries the policy three clicks down.
How many clicks to find the privacy policy from the homepage?
Three clicks, through a trust centre. The footer link “Data Trust & Privacy” opens the TELUS Trust Centre, which is a statement of values rather than a policy. From there “Privacy first”, and only then the Privacy Commitment. Three clicks is accessible but indirect, and the two pages in front of the document are about how trustworthy the company is rather than what it collects.
Is there a meaningful choice about cookies and tracking before data is collected?
Two real buttons, and a default that favours them. “Accept all cookies” is a solid green button, “Manage cookies” is outlined beside it, with category control behind a clearly labelled settings option. Worth quoting the banner on what the × does: close it and you are “happy with the selection that we have made for you”. Adobe, Google Analytics, Google Ads, Microsoft and Reddit identifiers are all set before you answer.
How hard is the policy to read, how much of it is there, and can you get it in one piece?
Grade 12.7 across 4,463 words, in two documents. Difficulty 1, length 3, access 2. The Privacy Commitment runs 3,608 words at Grade 13.3 and the Cookies Statement adds 855 at Grade 10.2, which is the most readable cookie document measured in this index. Measure it yourself.
How many clicks to reach data settings, and can you delete your account yourself?
A form that turns off the data sales. TELUS discloses that it shares subscriber location in de-identified form with third parties for research and product development, and publishes a self-serve opt-out: a phone number field, three radio buttons, and an Opt-out button, three clicks from the homepage with no login. It is the only telecom here with any self-serve privacy control at all. What it does not offer is a route to see or delete what is held about you, which still runs through privacy@telus.com and the Data Trust Office.
Find the support page. How many clicks, and is there a way to speak to a human?
A human, after you tell it what you want. “Contact us” is one click from the footer and opens Online, Phone and In-store tabs, but the Phone tab will not show a number until you pick a product first. A person is reachable in about three clicks, and no phone number is visible before that.
Overall finding
13 out of 20 Compliance-bound
TELUS is the only brand in this index that admits to monetizing customer data and then builds the switch to turn it off, which is more honesty than the rest of the sector offers and genuinely worth the score. The rest of it works against that. The privacy policy sits behind two pages about how trustworthy the company is, and the cookie banner tells you that closing it means accepting the selection someone else made for you. Disclosure and a working opt-out are the hard part, and TELUS did the hard part. The easy part is a footer link.
