13 out of 20 Compliance-bound
The digital-first bank with the longest privacy document of any bank in the index and the most analogue way out of it.
How many clicks to find the privacy policy from the homepage?
Two clicks, through a proper privacy hub. The footer link “Privacy” opens a page listing the Privacy Code, the Digital Privacy and Interest-Based Advertising notice and AdChoices. The Code is the second click. No visible last-updated date on the Code itself.
Is there a meaningful choice about cookies and tracking before data is collected?
Scotiabank’s consent stack, including the good part. “Accept All” sits beside “Manage Preferences”, and the preference centre carries a working Reject all, which its parent has and the other Big Five banks do not. All four optional categories still arrive switched on, so a visitor who dismisses the banner has agreed to everything.
How hard is the policy to read, how much of it is there, and can you get it in one piece?
Grade 12.1 across 13,384 words, in two documents. Difficulty 2, length 0, access 2. The Privacy Code alone runs 11,828 words, which makes it the longest single privacy document measured in this index, longer than CIBC’s entire two-document set. The prose is mid-range. There is simply an enormous amount of it. Measure it yourself.
How many clicks to reach data settings, and can you delete your account yourself?
Write to the Global Privacy Officer. “To request access to, or correction of, your personal information… you may write our Global Privacy Officer at theprivacyofficer@tangerine.ca or by mail.” Consent withdrawal and marketing preferences run through a phone line. The address is clearly labelled and easy to find, which is the whole of what earns the score. The Code also carries Scotiabank’s access-fee clause word for word: Tangerine “may charge you a nominal access fee”.
Find the support page. How many clicks, and is there a way to speak to a human?
A human in one click. “Contact us” from the footer, with 1-877-464-5678 and 1-888-826-4374 as tappable links and chat alongside. No login.
Overall finding
13 out of 20 Compliance-bound
Tangerine scores two points below the bank that owns it, and every point of the gap sits in the documents. Scotiabank names an online route to your information and Tangerine does not; Scotiabank’s documentation runs 6,959 words and Tangerine’s runs 13,384. What it did inherit is the access-fee clause. A bank with no branches asks you to write a letter, which is the sort of thing that happens when a subsidiary takes its parent’s boilerplate and none of its improvements.
