Holds more sensitive information than any bank in the index, and asks you to put a letter in the post to see it.

Transparency, Consent, Clarity, Control, Empathy · clockwise from the top
01
Transparency 3 / 4

How many clicks to find the privacy policy from the homepage?

Two clicks, to a policy written in principles. The Canadian Division Privacy Policy is two clicks from the homepage and opens as a web page, structured around ten numbered privacy principles rather than a wall of clauses. A separate Online Privacy Statement, which is the cookie document, is a further click.

02
Consent 3 / 4

Is there a meaningful choice about cookies and tracking before data is collected?

A real choice, one step away. “Accept all cookies” and “Cookie settings” are both buttons, side by side, with four categories behind the clearly labelled settings option. The optional three arrive switched on, so a visitor who dismisses the banner has agreed to all of them. Only one Adobe identifier is set before the banner is answered, which is cleaner than any telecom in the index.

03
Clarity 2 / 4

How hard is the policy to read, how much of it is there, and can you get it in one piece?

Grade 12.5 across 4,549 words, in two documents. Difficulty 2, length 3, access 2. The policy runs 3,261 words and the cookie statement 1,288, and they have to be read together. The ten-principle structure genuinely helps, and this is the most readable financial policy measured outside Rogers. Measure it yourself.

04
Control 2 / 4

How many clicks to reach data settings, and can you delete your account yourself?

In writing, to the Privacy Officer. Principle 9 is explicit: “If you send us a request in writing, we tell you what personal information about you we have, and how we use and disclose it.” Principle 10 repeats it for anyone who wants to review their file. The Privacy Officer is named with a postal address, which is clearly labelled and easy to find, and is the whole of what earns this score. There is no online route to your own information anywhere.

05
Empathy 4 / 4

Find the support page. How many clicks, and is there a way to speak to a human?

A human in one click. “Contact us” sits in the top navigation and opens a page listing more than a dozen lines by product, from group benefits to individual insurance, every one a tappable link. No login.

Overall finding

14 out of 20 Trust-aware

Manulife holds the most sensitive category of information in this index. Not what you bought or where you browsed, but your health, your medical history and the terms on which someone decided what your life is worth insuring. It scores the same as three of the Big Five banks, and the shape is the same too: reachable, readable, and closed. The ten-principle policy is genuinely one of the better written documents here, and it ends by asking you to post a letter to find out what is in your file.
