Banking that puts you first, and starts recording before it says hello.

Transparency, Consent, Clarity, Control, Empathy · clockwise from the top
01
Transparency 3 / 4

How many clicks to find the privacy policy from the homepage?

Two clicks, through a legal index rather than a privacy one. The footer link “Privacy & Legal” lands on a list of roughly twenty account agreements, and the Privacy Agreement is the second click. It does open cleanly, with “Effective date: July 1, 2026” at the top.

02
Consent 1 / 4

Is there a meaningful choice about cookies and tracking before data is collected?

No banner, and the recording has already started. On a logged-out first load, before any interaction, EQ Bank had already set Google Analytics, the Meta advertising pixel, Google Ads, Reddit and Microsoft advertising identifiers, and Hotjar session recording, while loading Google Tag Manager, Facebook, Hotjar and DoubleClick. Four seconds of waiting produced no notice anywhere on the page. The only opt-out the Agreement offers is your browser settings.

03
Clarity 2 / 4

How hard is the policy to read, how much of it is there, and can you get it in one piece?

Grade 14.7 across 4,715 words, in two documents. Difficulty 0, length 3, access 2. The Privacy Agreement alone measures Grade 15.3, which makes it the hardest single privacy document in this index. It is at least short, and the Code of Privacy Principles beside it is shorter. Measure it yourself.

04
Control 2 / 4

How many clicks to reach data settings, and can you delete your account yourself?

In writing, to the Chief Privacy Officer. “You may make a request in writing for access to your personal information”, and corrections likewise. A Chief Privacy Officer is named with contact details, which is what the score rests on. The one online route, an opt-out from marketing email through your account, is a marketing preference rather than access to your information.

05
Empathy 4 / 4

Find the support page. How many clicks, and is there a way to speak to a human?

A human in one click. “Get in Touch” from the homepage reaches Customer Care, with 1-844-437-2265 on the page and live chat to an agent beside it. No login.

Overall finding

12 out of 20 Compliance-bound

EQ Bank markets itself on putting you first and is the only brand in the Canadian financial set that never asks before it starts collecting. Session recording and four separate advertising networks fire on the homepage of a bank, with no banner to dismiss and nothing to decline. Its privacy writing is also the most difficult of the eleven. The distance between what this brand says about itself and what its homepage does is the widest measured in this sector.
