A monopoly you cannot leave, a cookie banner that mostly waits, and eleven thousand words explaining itself.

Transparency, Consent, Clarity, Control, Empathy · clockwise from the top
01
Transparency 4 / 4

How many clicks to find the privacy policy from the homepage?

One click, from the footer. “Privacy Statement” opens the document directly as a web page, dated June 2025, with a persistent “Manage cookies” link beside it. Scored on the Ontario residential site, which is where a household with a gas bill actually lands, rather than the corporate parent.

02
Consent 3 / 4

Is there a meaningful choice about cookies and tracking before data is collected?

A real choice, and it largely holds. “Accept all cookies” is a solid yellow button and “Manage preferences” is a button beside it rather than a text link, with category control behind it. The banner says plainly that optional cookies are used with your consent and essential ones are always on. A first load sets one advertising identifier and little else, which is far closer to waiting than any telecom manages.

03
Clarity 1 / 4

How hard is the policy to read, how much of it is there, and can you get it in one piece?

Grade 14.5 across 11,529 words, in one place. Difficulty 0, length 0, access 4. It holds together as a single document, which is the only thing keeping the score off the floor, and it is the worst pairing of difficulty and length measured anywhere in this index: postgraduate reading, and longer than most short stories. It covers Ontario, Quebec and five US states in one text, which is much of why. Measure it yourself.

04
Control 2 / 4

How many clicks to reach data settings, and can you delete your account yourself?

A form that looks like a rights portal and is not one. The statement routes you to a Data Trust Center contact form, two clicks away with no login, which is promising until you open the “Type of Request” menu. The options are privacy question, privacy concern, and three flavours of marketing opt-out. There is no access, no correction and no deletion. Anything you cannot see or edit yourself inside MyAccount goes to the Privacy Officer by post.

05
Empathy 4 / 4

Find the support page. How many clicks, and is there a way to speak to a human?

A human on the page. 1-866-763-5427 is printed on the Ontario residential homepage, with Contact Us a click away. No login, and an emergency line sits above the masthead on every page.

Overall finding

14 out of 20 Trust-aware

Enbridge Gas is the first brand in the index you cannot walk away from. There is no competing gas line to switch to, which makes the consent question different in kind: agreeing is not a preference, it is a condition of heating your house. What it does well is wait, mostly, before it starts collecting. What it does badly is explain. Eleven and a half thousand words at a postgraduate reading level, and a privacy request form whose menu contains no privacy requests.
