13 out of 20 Compliance-bound
A privacy policy you cannot read on its own: one accordion among thirteen, inside a page that also covers gift cards and tire disposal.
How many clicks to find the privacy policy from the homepage?
One click, from the footer, into a filing cabinet. The Privacy Policy link resolves to the combined Policies page. The privacy section is there and it is collapsed, sitting between the Resale Policy and the Customer Service Accessibility Policy.
Is there a meaningful choice about cookies and tracking before data is collected?
OneTrust, installed and never shown. No banner on a first load, though a “Cookie Settings” link in the footer opens a working preference centre with a Confirm My Choices button. Eight tracking identifiers, including Adobe, Google, Meta, Snapchat and Pinterest, are set before any of that is offered.
How hard is the policy to read, how much of it is there, and can you get it in one piece?
Grade 13.5 across 8,881 words, and not as a document. Difficulty 1, length 1, access 2. Long, middling prose, and the access score is what hurts: the policy cannot be opened by itself, cannot be read without expanding an accordion, and shares a 28,000-word page with every other policy the company publishes. It is also dated September 2023. Measure it yourself.
How many clicks to reach data settings, and can you delete your account yourself?
Two privacy addresses, for two companies. privacyoffice@cantire.com for the retailer and privacyinquiries@ctfs.com for the financial services arm, with a toll-free line. Nothing self-serve.
Find the support page. How many clicks, and is there a way to speak to a human?
Four published phone lines. Contact Us lists separate numbers for online orders, Triangle rewards, roadside assistance and the credit card, which is more routes to a person than almost any brand here.
Overall finding
13 out of 20 Compliance-bound
Canadian Tire is the only brand in this index whose privacy policy has no page of its own. It is a section of a combined policies document, collapsed by default, filed alphabetically among returns and gift cards, and last revised in 2023. Nothing about it is hidden and nothing about it is a document either. The contrast with the four phone numbers on the contact page is the point: this is a company that knows how to make things reachable when it decides to.
